UK: PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering Multi-scale modelling of bone cutting

Mechanics of Advanced Materials Research Group
Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

A PhD Scholarship is available for a high-calibre candidate to work on a new project on miniature ultrasonic cutting devices for high precision minimal access orthopaedic surgical procedures. The successful candidate will be a part of research collaboration between Loughborough University, University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh. The proposed programme of research brings together a unique collaboration between the three research groups in the UK that are engaged in researching the mechanics of the surgical tool/bone interaction to deliver devices that rely on power ultrasonics to improve the accuracy and control of orthopaedic surgery involving deep penetration into bone. In combining this expertise, the aim is to deliver a new generation of novel miniaturised ultrasonic bone cutting devices to deal with the challenges of minimal access bone cutting surgical procedures. The proposal is supported by Mectron Medical, the inventors of piezosurgery, and Sonic Systems, a leading UK SME dedicated tdeveloping new ultrasonic technologies.

The student will be involved in development of the advanced multi-scale finite-element model for analysis of the mechanism of bone separation under the action of the ultrasonic cutting tool with account for microstructure of the bone tissue and its anisotropic viscoelastoplastic properties.

A first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours) in mechanical engineering, continuum mechanics or applied mathematics is required and a relevant second degree may also be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in finite element modelling are required. Previous experience in finite element modelling of advanced engineering or bio materials or the use of XFEM would be an advantage.

The starting date is 1st July 2010 and the three-year scholarship has a stipend of £8,000 per annum tax free plus tuition fees of £13,500 for overseas candidates or £11,500 per annum tax free for home/EU candidates plus tuition fees.
